Geneva
Most people come to Geneva to access the Alps. With ski resorts as little as 40 minutes by car, it makes a lot of sense to fly in and transfer to the slopes immediately. But have you ever considered staying in a Geneva hotel and experiencing a bit of this fantastic city before you hit the slopes?
The first time you actually come to Geneva, rather than bypassing at speed, you are most definitely left with a gut feeling of "how much is this going to cost?". However, as with many major cities, there are ways to ensure you don;t need a second mortgage to visit and enjoy it's splendour.
What to see?
One of Geneva's finest features (apart from some of the lavish Geneva hotel bars!) is actully it's waterfront place on Lake Geneva. With luxury yachts in the harbour, a walk along the water's edge is just beautiful and takes in some of the old facades of the luxury aprtments along the lakeside. You can also see the 140m high Jet d'Eau fountain, markets and the old town - they are all free.
Outside the city you have the Alps on your doorstep as well of course as the skiing and snowboarding that brings along with sightseeing or a coffee on the slopes. Geneva is also surrounded by vineyards and some of these offer free wine tasting. There's also many other walking and leisure pursuits that really won;t cost you very much.
For a few Euro's (or Swiss Francs) there is the Mus?e d'Art Moderne et Contemporain - MAMCO, with all it's art and sculptures that wait your eye. Alongside the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum (Musee International de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge) which captures most of the being of the Red Cross, there's also the Cathedrale de St-Pierre, one of the key sites of the Reformation.
Staying in Geneva
If you have money, then the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva should probably be a real contender - but from over £700 per night average price, you can see it's not at the budget end. Just one of many 4 and 5 star hotels within the City, there are other smaller hotels that suit all budgets - just staying here is an experience.
